Dipperstar padded out of his den and into the cool morning air. He was planning on taking Whisperpaw around the territory today to show him the borders. It had been some time since he had an apprentice of his own, so he was looking forward to this. The younger tom would certainly put his skills to a test, but there was no reason for him to not give a good challenge back either. He padded through the silent camp and over to the apprentice den. "Whisperpaw? Are you ready for a patrol?" he meowed, sitting down to wait for a reply.

Whisperpaw sat up qiuckly at the sound of his mentor's voice. He stood and shook him self, quickly licking down his stray tufts of fur. "Coming," he called, hurriedly trotting out of the den to meet dipperstar. He still couldn't believe the clan leader had wanted him as an apprentice. He had to be very well behaved today; he was determined to be the best apprentice dipperstar had ever trained. He padded out into the daylight putting on the same proud grin he always wore. " where are we patrolling today?" He asked.

Dipperstar got to his paws and started to pad out of camp, flicking his tail for Whisperpaw to follow. "We'll start by the Moonclan border and then work our way down past Stormclan's," he replied. "You have probably caught their scent already at some point, but now you'll learn their pure scents." He padded out into the open field and looked back. "This way first," he called, pointing his tail toward the Moonclan border. "You may take the lead and tell me what you scent along the way."

Whisperpawnodded, feeling excitement boil under his fur. He trotted happily down along the path that led to moonclan's border. As soon as heneared the border, a thick scent rolled over him, smelling of fish and river water. He wrinkled his nose in disgust, but continued to walk until he reached the border line where sunclan and moonclan's territories. Whisperpaw tried to pay close attention to the scent markers, but the scent of moonclan was too distracting."do they always smell like this?" He asked, turning his nose up.

"Yes," Dipperstar replied. "Because they eat more fish than any other prey, their scent is very recognizable. Make sure you remember it well for later." The wind was blowing across Moonclans's territory, which made the scent even stronger. He gave Whisperpaw a small nudge and pointed his tail in the direction of Featherclan. "Featherclan live on the far side of this land here. And if you smell closely, you might catch their scent when the wind is like this." He let Whisperpaw get a moment to examine the scents before he padded on. "Stormclan is this way, but keep your eyes and ears open. I don't trust them to stay on their side of the river," he meowed, then continueing with a high spirit. "And if all is quiet and we get done quickly, I can teach you some fighting moves when we're done."

Whisperpaw nodded in reply, casting one more glance at moonclan before he turned and trotted after dipperstar towards the stormclan border. They walked on for a bit until they came apon a rapidly moving river. He stared in wonder at the swift water. it could definately sweep a cat away if they were senseless enough to jump in. He stared across iit and saw a large , dark forest that smelled mostly of pine. Another scent wafted over to him that smelled like trees, mud and crow food. It wasn't as bad as moonclan, but it was bad. He backed up a little, gazing up at dipperstar. "Is that stormclan?" He asked, staring into the dark woods.

Dipperstar walked calmly down to the river to drink. Everything vas quiet and there were no scents of tresspassers. He looked back at Whisperpaw when he spoke. "That's right. We're lucky to have the river between us and them, unlike Featherclan. They always seem to have problems with Stormclan," he explained. "Actually, it's good to have such a barren land as we do too. None of the other clans seem to see any benefit in invading it, but they don't know how to hunt here like we do." He looked up to the sky and the sun. It was nearly sunhigh and the warmth should have brought out some prey by now. "Are you hungry?" he asked. Whisperpaw wouldn't be very used to long walks yet and Dipperstar wouldn't want to push him too far. "We can catch something to eat and rest before your battle training."

Whisperpaw stopped himself before nodding. Some thing to eat sounded wonderful right now, and he was in the mood to rest. But he had to be tough if he wanted to be great. He was going to decline the offer and tell him to go straight to battle training, until his stomach rumbled in protest. He stared down at it reluctantly, " I guess I could use some food," he admitted, staring thoughtfully at his paws.

Dipperstar tried to keep his whiskers from twitching. "Don't worry about it," he purred. "Starved and exhausted warriors don't win fights. Now then-" He sniffed the air, trying to pick up the scent of prey. He didn't have to search long before he discovered a mouse near the river. He turned to Whiperpaw and meowed softly, careful not to scare the mouse. "Watch closely." With soft and steady steps, exaggerating the movements a bit so Whisperpaw could learn them more easily, he crept up on the mouse, drawing as close as possible before he lept and caught it with a swift bite. With the prey, he padded back to his apprentice. "Do you want this one, or would you rather hunt yourself?" Dipperstar suspected Whisperpaw would be the kind who'd try to push himself too far eventually, but right now he looked like he could handle a short hunt without a problem.

Whisperpaw stared in awe at the mouse, the warm, appetizing scent wafting up to his nose. His stomach told him to dive in and eat it, but he also really wanted to try for himself. He shook his head. " I want to try." He replied surveying the grasses as if the prey would leap out and present itself to him. since, of course it didn't, he listened and smelled the air for a scent. Suddenly, he caught the scent of something and trotted after it into the grass. He grew excited as he came closer to it. He froze when he saw it, another mouse, nibbling on something. Crouching low like he saw dipperstar do. He crept forward, a smug expression plastered to his face. He'd catch this one on his first try! They other apprentices would envy him for being this great. All of a sudden, his thoughts were cut short. A dry twig snapped beneath his paw and the mouse glanced at him for a milasecond before bolting. Whisperpaw, dumbfounded, tried clumsily to catch it, but it had disappeared. "Mouse dung!" He hissed in frustration and embarressment.
