Hazelpaw crouched down and narrowed her eyes narrowed in concentration. Ok, just like you were taught... she thought, ready to pounce. She eyed the prey one last time before leaping forward - but missed it completely. She stomped a paw angrily in defeat. "Darn it!" she mewed, grumbling aside to herself. "What did I do wrong?" She looked up at Stoneheart. "I did it just like you said, right?"

Stoneheart purred warmly. "Well, it was pretty good, but you just need more experience. Remember, your tail is used for balance and keep your feet light." She made small gestures while she spoke, showing quick examples of what she meant. "You'll get it all in time, I'm sure." A rustling sound came from the thicket somewhere to the left. Stoneheart waved her tail, giving the young tortoise shell to pay attention. She dropped to a crouch and snuck towards the sound, slowly and quietly. She pounced and bit the mouse in the neck before it could run away. She buried it and turned back to Hazelpaw. "Now show me your stalking again," she said, knowing the young cat should have learned something.

Hazelpaw nodded, going over everything Stoneheart had said in her mind. She saw another mouse among some tree roots and crouched down. 'Tail for balance,' she thought, creeping closer. 'Light feet.' She creeped up slower this time and the mouse didn't suspect a thing. She crouched down, and waited for the perfect moment - and hopefully it would be this time. She pounced - and got it! She smiled. "YES!" She meowed happily.

"Lovely!" Stoneheart made her way to Hazelpaw. "One last thing. Always keep your eyes on the prey. Just eat it if you want to. You deserve it," she purred, proud of the apprentice. "Know what? You've done so well today, so you can decide what we should do later," she offered. "Something you want to catch up with or just something you want to do." Hazelpaw was ahead of many other apprentices at her age already, so she deserved to do someting fun from time to time.

"Can I go with you on patrol if you go?" She asked, hopefully. She'd always wanted to go on a patrol. All the other apprentices had and they said it was fun. A few apprentices even had run-in's with other clans, which one apprentice said was a great training experience that taught patience and bravery. Another had run into some foxes and drove them out of the territory. She'd always hoped her first patrol would be as cool as one of these.

Stoneheart tried to remember if any of the other warriors had gone on a patrol yet, but none had gone recently. "Yeah, sure we can go," she answered with a smile. "But I must say, we're more likely to see nothing happen than something very exciting. We'll patrol along the Featherclan border." The border should be rather peaceful with their current state, as long as they didn't run into that pesky Featherleaf. She had sworn to rip that she-cat's fur of the nex time they met, but she didn't want to do that in front of Hazelpaw. "Let's go," she purred.
